Some New Work

These are some in progress pieces floating around my studio. I finally uploaded images from my camera. The bottom one is a detail of a litho i did with screenprint. I'm not sure how to finish it. The Pink hair piece is a screenprint I did for a print exchange/show that I was juried into. I think I titled it Trying to be Her (I just realized I didn't rotate the image to vertical). I'm thinking about taking an extra one and sewing into it and putting it in my shop. Keep your eyes open.
I hope you're having a good weekend. Send your love to those in Kentucky who don't have electricity after the crazy ice storm. Many are still in for a rough couple of weeks.
Take care and stay warm.

i love i love i love

I love John Waters and his strangely bizarre and beautiful movies. The visuals in his movies are so ugly beautiful, my favorite kind of beautiful. I don't know what got me thinking about him specifically today but he's on my mind and I wanted to say something. He creates these bizarre worlds that are lewd and crude but so mesmerizing. I think it's what I'm trying to do with my own work. Maybe not as lewd or crude but surely bizarre and mesmerizing. Occasionally I wish I lived inside one of his movies but only for a bit. I don't think I could dwell there too long.

My friend Christian Campos makes really amazing work and he has cited John Waters as an influence. Last year he was in a painting class and each week a different student showed a film that was an influence in their work and he showed Pink Flamingos. That caught my attention and when I saw his work I fell in love with it. I wish he had a website, I will beg him to start one. These are a few images I took from his facebook account. I'm in the middle of text messaging him to make sure it's okay that I feature these pics. Keep an eye out for him. He's going to do amazing things!

Blonde Hair No Picture

no pictures yet but i did it.  i have blonde hair and i like it! thanks to the last comments on my last blog, thanks to mom, as well. i'm not going to be terribly impulsive about this tattoo thing but i have been wanting one for a long time and i'm twenty-six now so i think that's being the opposite of impulsive. I want a thing of flowers going across my upper back but i won't get it until i find exactly what i want. it has to be perfect.
sorry for the lack of capitalization and any real deep thoughts on this post. i'm in a hurry to get back to screenprinting. I promise promise to get pics soon of my new litho and other goodies.
take care and have a great weekend!

Something to think about

This morning I kept thinking of the word Nowhere. I love that word so much because if you break it down it's also Now Here which I think says so much. Sometimes I feel like I'm nowhere now here. Get it? Or am I thinking too much?
Nowhere nowhere nowhere
NOW HERE.
I think it's interesting. I feel a little bit nowhere today.
But I'm thinking seriously about getting my first tattoo. I really want something across my upper back. Tomorrow I'm dying my hair blond so I think a tattoo might compliment that nicely. I'm mostly saying this here because my mom reads my blog and I thought this would be a nice way to break it to her.... Is that okay, Mom? Call me sometime... ( :
I'm printing my first litho today and I'm very excited. I'll post results soon.
The above image is an oldie but a goody and can be found in my shop. Check it out!
Also, I'm still on Paper and Stitch and since it's a new month I could really use your votes again. This time the winnings include money and a free month on the site. Please go and check out paper and stitch and maybe click on my heart???? Thanks!

What A Day!

What an exciting day! By the end of the day the past eight years will be in the past and no longer part of the future. I say that in an optimistic way. A lot of the yucky residue of the last eight years will stick around for a while.
What I'm trying to say is, yay for today!
Also something has been on my mind. I get so excited when I receive comments on my blog and what to answer them all individually but am not sure the best way to go about that. If i reply to the comment in the comment section does the original commenter receive notice? Should I reply on commenters' blogs? How does this blog thing work?!

Artist Statement

I just wrote my first rough draft artist statement for my current body of work.  Any feedback?

In my work everything is alive.  Mountains turn into ghosts turn into hair turn into mountains again.  Everything has eyes. Everything looks and sees.  In these made up worlds the colors are soft and pretty, they drip like melting ice cream.  For some reason everyone is sad and I’m not sure why.  It might be because sometimes the mountains just want to be mountains and the ghosts just want to be ghosts.  They wish they could be themselves and that would be enough.

But I don’t draw them that way.

Say Good-Bye

A couple of pieces of work that have been in my shop since I opened have flown the coop. Both Bunny Girl and Drip Drip Drip Drip were purchased in the past week. While I'm happy for the sale, they were two pieces I really loved so it was hard to see them go. But now it's even more reason to make more work for the shop.
Any readers feel sad sometimes when you let pieces go?
In school news, my first week of classes have been hectic but good. Besides horrible horrible weather, I'm excited about my various printmaking classes. I'm also taking a class about professional studio practices that I'm really looking forward to. A lot of people think you get your MFA to teach but that's not really why I'm here. I'm here to make work, so this class will help me figure out an alternative way to live my life and hopefully be successful.
I realize this is my normal Etsy feature day. Maybe I'm still on a break from regular postings. I'm thinking about a favorite artist posting once a week and an Etsy feature once a week and maybe on other once a week regular. What do you suggest?

Missing

I'm sorry I've been gone so long from my blog. For those of you still following my blog thanks so much for sticking it out. School started back today so I'm hoping to get into a more regular routine with this. I'm also thinking about finally biting the bullet and getting Internet at my house. It's about time.
Thanks to those of you who left sweet and thoughtful comments on my post about my studio. I really am trying to look at what happened as a way that will help me grow in my work and leave the past behind.
I have plenty of new pics to upload including new years eve and various other nightly events. I also want to post my Christmas gifts that I received made by several of my favorite Etsy sellers. I had a very Etsy Christmas this year, much to my delight.
The above image is an oldie but a goodie from my shop. If you haven't been there in a while check it out!
This Wednesday my Etsy feature will return.
For now, enjoy your Monday!!

Addicted to Deadwood

Over Christmas break not only did I finish off the last season of Mad Men, I also started a new season of a new show. New to me show...
I made it through the whole first season of Deadwood before I had to return to work/school.
I realize I'm probably talking about old news but I love this show so much. If you haven't seen it check it out. I've talked to a lot of people about it and have gotten a mixed reaction. But I think it's beautiful.
This guy, W. Earl Brown, is from Kentucky so I have a bit of fondness for him. Everyone is sick of hearing me talk about how I sat by him on a bench once in Murray. But I did! And I didn't even know who he was. I found out later when I saw him in the coffee shop signing an autograph. Okay, all those who have heard this story a million and one times (one person in particular), that's the last time I'll say it. q :p
One last note. Timothy Olyphant does a great job in the show but I have trouble seeing past the fact that he played one of the killers in Scream 2, was in Go, and was a twenty-something boy on Sex In the City. Who knew he could be a good actor?

Check out the show and let me know what you think about it!

Happy New Year and Sad Studio

I hope everyone had a great New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.  I had fun on the Eve and spent the next day being deliciously lazy.
So today, January 2, 2009, I went back to my studio for the first time since the break and found something terribly sad.  The pile you see above you (in the terribly blurry picture) is now destroyed.  It was a pile of finished work, scraps, and beautiful papers.  Somehow my studio flooded over the break and this is what I lost.  I know I should be thankful this is all I lost and I certainly certainly am.  I'm just terribly sad.
I also lost a fish today.  What a yucky day huh?  I bought two fish on Tuesday, Iris Bluemberg and Parker Rose.  Iris attacked and killed Parker.  I'm really upset with her right now but we're working on our relationship.  If we're going to live together we're going to have to get along.
Things I lost today:
Art
Paper
Fish
My appetite.
Happy New Year!
